DAGUA - In Papua New Guinea, a house symbolises a person’s life. A house shows status and defines a person’s standing in the community.
To be invited into a person’s house means that the person has accepted you into his or her life and you are now privy to some things about the person’s life.
This is a collection of short poems exposing my view of the world through a window of my house.
Through this window, the reader will catch a glimpse of some aspects of my life as a Papua New Guinean. This book of verse is a small window on the world I see and the world I live in.
To the reader, I introduce Talicia Nuhunge who contributed four original compositions I have included in this collection. She is an important part of my world and she now speaks alongside me.
The poetry was written in English and Tok Pisin and the reader will find that Tok Pisin is often used without English translation in some of the collection.
It is my view that Papua New Guinean literature cannot be truly captured without the use of Tok Pisin.
Where I have employed unfamiliar Tok Pisin, vernacular or foreign language words, a footnote is provided at the end of each verse for clarity.
Even though, this book is a window to my world, the reader will find that this book speaks about a wide range of topics.
The verses capture snippets of everyday life in Papua New Guinea, the people and the land as well as biodiversity, politics, development issues and spirituality.
It is now up to readers to hear the words and form their own picture of the world and use some of the experiences shared in this collection as a compass to perhaps enhance their lives.
