THE countdown is on, with only 100 days to go until launch of the Sixth BSP PNG Games.
Taking place on Lae’s home soil from 16– 29 November, the Games will see over 9,000 participants from more than 22 provinces gather for two weeks of competitive sports.
Sports include Athletics, Soccer, Netball, Basketball, Power & Weight Lifting, Boxing, Volleyball, AFL, Rugby Union 7’s,Rugby League 9’s, Swimming, Lawn Bowls, Hockey, Canoeing, Squash, , Touch Footy, Taekwondo, Karate, Cricket, Darts, Softball and Body Building.
The Host Organising Committee is committed to taking PNG’s largest sporting event to a new level in 2014, with improved venues, infrastructure and facilities already underway.
Major infrastructure updates include refurbishments to the main Sir Ignatius Kilage Outdoor, Indoor and Swimming Stadium. These have already begun and are due for completion by the end of October, well ahead of the 16 November launch.
Other venues across town will be upgraded as national government funds become available in the near future. These include the Eriku Oval, Hockey Oval, softball and soccer pitches.
PNG Games CEO Materua Tamarua is excited about the upcoming Games saying it will be the biggest event Lae has ever seen.
“The organising committee and six full-time staff are working around the clock to ensure all aspects of the Games are delivered in time for November’s launch.
“Infrastructure updates, registration of more than 9,000 athletes, venue management, event scheduling and sponsor acquisition are all in the works, with big things happening behind the scenes,” says Mr Tamarua.
The Games will kick off in Lae with an opening ceremony at the Sir Ignatius Stadium on Sunday 16 November. The ceremony will be televised live across the nation on EMTV and include performances by ARIA awarding winning artist Jessica Mauboy and the PNG favourite Jokema.
